    Om Puri is definitely one of the most talented cinema artists that India has ever seen. Although his commercial successes were few Om Puri’s roles in his numerous art films and independent movies has earned him the title of being the ‘Sikander (Alexander) of Art Films’ of India.

    Om Puri was born to Rajesh Puri, an ex-Indian Railway and ex-Indian Army employee, and his wife, in Patiala, Punjab. Although there were no official birth records of his, Om Puri estimated his date of birth to be on 18th October 1950. Om Puri often recalled his poverty-stricken childhood, as he had to start earning at the tender age of 7 years, to support his family after his father was wrongfully convicted of theft. One of his most vivid memories of his younger days was that when he got admission in Film Institute of India in Pune after completing his studies at the National School of Drama, he did not have a fresh set of clothes to wear to his class.

    Om Puri’s height was 5 ft 7 inches (173 cm) while Om Puri’s weight was 82 kg (181 lbs). Om Puri was a graduate in acting from the National School of Drama, New Delhi. Initially, Om Puri’s wife was Seema Kapoor, with whom he got divorced in 1991. Later on, Om Puri’s wife was Nandita Puri, whom he married in 1993, but the couple got separated in 2013. Om Puri has a son, Ishaan Puri, from his second marriage.

    Om Puri made his first commercial debut with the Marathi movie ‘Ghashiran Kotwal’ (1972). Om Puri’s debut in Bollywood was in the movie ‘Godhuli’ (1977). Apart from this, Om Puri also acted in the hit English TV series, ‘The Jewel in the Crown’, in 1984.

    Om Puri was also the recipient of the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 as well as winning the International Film Festival of Prayag’s Lifetime Achievement Award, in 2015.

    Om Puri died on the 6th of January, 2017 due to a heart attack, at the age of 66 years.
